It is here, the 2018 Open Championship. It is incredibly the 147th time this historical Major Championship will take place. The weather in Scotland has been extremely hot resulting in players commenting the fairways are faster than the greens, so fast that Brandt Snedeker recorded a drive of 427 yards earlier in the week. This should have an impact on the bombers not at a significant advantage over shorter players. Check out our 2018 Open Championship Preview & Betting Tips.
Carnoustie Golf Links
The course is a classic seaside Scottish Links course consistently coming in the top 25 in world rankings.
The course is widely regarded as the toughest of all the Open Courses. Its length and fairway width coupled with long rough will prove a handful for the best players in the world. The course may well be remembered by the collapse of Jean van de Velde at the Open Championship in 1999. Van de Velde arrived at the last hole with a 3 shot lead only needing to achieve a double bogey to lift the Claret Jug. Driver, grandstand, long rough and Barry Burn stepped in and the rest is history.
This year will be very interesting with the course sun burnt, brown and fast. Holding the fairways could be a real challenge. Former world number one David Duval said after viewing the course “I’ve never seen anything like it”. “Its very unsettling, very, very different. Trying to figure out where your ball’s going to stop, its just unbelievable”. This will be fun!!!
Who Will Win?
I have narrowed my focus on players who are straight off the tee as length is not a necessity with how the fairways will be running. I have also placed a large emphasis on scrambling as the greens will be extremely hard to hit in regulation my opinion. Lets get in to it!!!
My top pick here. McIlroy has played sparingly this year however I have liked what I have seen. His strokes gained off the tee and Scrambling stats are both right up there both on the USPGA and European Tours.
This guy has been on fire with a win on both the USPGA Tour and the European Tour. He has been a standout in all stats especially the stats that I have earmarked as a prerogative for this week.
Lets hope he doesn’t get an illness or an injury. He can be a drama queen however there is no doubting his scrambling and putting ability. He is not the most reliable off the tee however he is long and should be able to take advantage of irons and fairway woods.
Another guy who has been in good form and I believe is way over the odds. He has fantastic scrambling ability and great results this year.
Don’t think he can win YET however is a chance for top 10. The big Kiwi has been getting better and better as the years go on. Has been in great form and can push in to the top 10.
