We’re into week 1 of the 2019 AFL Finals series and we have some great matches in the first week. With the year being so tight and hard to pick it has meant for a great finals series with every team in the 8 in with a chance to win the premiership (with the exclusion of the Bombers).
Lets get into our betting tips for the first week of the finals.
(Odds correct at time of posting)
West Coast V Essendon
Thursday 8:10 Optus Oval
The first game of the week sees last years premiers taking on the stragglers of the 8 Essendon over in West Coasts territory.
West Coast look to bring Nic Naitanui in to the team for the first final after 2 months on the sidelines, other than that there shouldn’t be too many other changes for the Eagles.
The Bombers are set to regain Cale Hooker, Orazio Fantasia, Dyson Heppell and Jake Stringer.
West Coast have beaten the Bombers 3 out of the last 4 times they have played in Perth and this should follow suit. I don’t see how the Bombers could win this over there.
Match Prediction – West Coast by 28 points
Geelong V Collingwood
Friday 7:50 MCG
Geelong managed to finish the year on top of the ladder with the Pies finishing fourth which sets up this awesome battle in the first qualifying final. This is a battle of the mids with both teams possessing extremely deep midfields.
De Goey, Sidebottom and Jaidyn Stephenson are likely to return for the Pies. The Cats probably won’t make any changes.
Geelong have won the past three matches against Collingwood played at the MCG.
The Cats dominance over the Pies in recent memory will hold them in good stead in this one. They also have a better forward line setup led by Tom Hawkins.
Match Prediction – Geelong by 15 points
GWS V Western Bulldogs
Saturday 3:20 Giants Stadium
The last four times these two team have played each other GWS have managed to get the job done three times. The only time the Bulldogs won was in round 22 this year when GWS were without Jacob Hopper and Jeremy Cameron, both of which will be playing in the elimination final. Hopper is a workhorse at stoppages helping his team get first hands on the ball and Cameron is so vital to their forward line setup.
These two inclusions are huge for GWS and I expect them to show up and make it to week 2 of the finals.
Match Prediction – GWS by 24 Points
Brisbane V Richmond
Saturday 7:25 Gabba
2nd on the ladder takes on 3rd at the Gabba on Saturday night to round out week 1 of the AFL finals. This is a repeat of round 23 of the regular season although this time it is on the Lions home turf, the Gabbatoir. Brisbane have only lost one game at the Gabba all year and that happened in round 5 against Collingwood.
The game in round 23 went in favour of the Tigers by 27 points but it wasn’t as convincing as the score line suggests.
Neither team will make too many changes going into the finals although Dion Prestia looks like he will return for the Tigers.
Brisbane on their home deck have been great all year and I expect them to carry on their winning ways in a tight one in week one of the finals.
Match Prediction – Brisbane by 3 points
